mitt romney taking a major step toward the republican nomination he scored in florida yesterday but as susan mcginness points out his rivals are not giving in. >> reporter: he talked like a nominee. >> we will end his administration. >> reporter: he thanked his supporters before blasting the president. >> mr. president you were elected to lead. you chose to follow and now it is time for you to get out of the way. >> reporter: florida marks his second win. he is expected to get secret service protection by thursday, the only current candidate to have it. despite winning less than a third of the vote newt gingrich is vowing to fight on. he spoke at a podium that read 46 states to go. >> we are going to contest every place and we are going to win and we will be in tampa as the nominee in august. >> reporter: for the first time this election season exit polls

show a gender gap. female voters backed romney in droves, helping him to a double digit win. rick santorum and ron paul skipped florida to campaign out west. in nevada santorum urged his opponents to ease up on their attacks. >> what we saw in the last few weeks in florida is not something that is going to help us win this election. >> paul who finished 4th called romney after his win. >> i congratulated him, he ran a good campaign but i also said i would see him soon in the caucus states. thank you. >> romney is expected to do well in the next 5 contests. in tampa, susan mcginness, wjz eyewitness news. >> 28 delegates are at stake in saturday's nevada caucuses. now more on a story we brought you as breaking news yesterday. a man dead any police involved shooting after he steals a police cruiser and tries to make a wild get away. wjz and monique griego are live

outside city police headquarters, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that chase involved officers from two counties before it came to deadly end here in baltimore city. the violence ended at the shopping center in baltimore city, where police shot and killed a man after they say he stole a cruiser and threatened an officer. police have released this photo of the suspect, 26-year-old mon pete chonna of baltimore. >> yeah, crime is getting worse and worse around this neighborhood. i just think it is crazy. >> reporter: police say it started a few miles away around 2:00 a.m. when a cop tried to pull chonna over for driving without his headlights on the highway. he crashed and then things got heated. >> he began to fight and told the officer he had a gun and will shoot the officer. >> reporter: somehow he managed to steal the police car and drove it to a motel 6. minutes

later a car speed out of the parking lot with several people inside including the man who stole the cruiser. they pulled it over and somehow he got into the driver's seat while they were putting the others in custody. he drove to the shopping center where it all ended. several officers fired shots. it is unclear how many shots went off and whether the suspect was armed. >> they didn't know what was on his mind although they could have maybe done it better if they department see a weapon in his hand. >> reporter: they insist they didn't chase him but used other methods to track him. >> police are questioning other people in connection with the incident. police have made an arrest in connection with the murder of an activist. police say he confessed. police say they knew each other

and robbery was the motive. his body was found in a well. he had been shot in the head. he was a well-known activist. the issue of same sex marriage was brought to the forefront during a senate committee hearing. opponents remain adamant the law defies the traditional definition of marriage, while the governor says legalizing same sex marriage is a matter of protecting children. >> it is not right and it is not just that the children of gay couples should have lesser protections than the children of others in our state. >> those with sincere religious convictions are being encouraged to give up their beliefs. >> last year the senate passed a version of it but it died in the house. if it makes it through the general assembly it is expected to go to referendum. paying for power after you

lose electricity, it is something some marylanders may no longer have to do because they have changed the rules. power companies can no longer charge us if we and 10% of other customers are in the dark for 24 hours, the changes are not retro active so don't look for credits on your bill from past outages. turning to sports the ravens will hold their annual state of the team address in owings mills. the owner will join the coach and the general manager to discuss the direction the franchise is taking. one of the hot topics will be a contract extension for joe flacco, who is coming off that performance where he outplayed tom brady, putting the ravens within seconds of reaching the super bowl. you said ray rice's contract is coming up. >> i think the idea here is to keep ray rice april joe flacco and joe rice in the fold.

23 and 1/2 past 6:00, when the governor delivers his state of the state address his talk will center on reducing a billion dollar shortfall in the budget by any means necessary, vic carter sat down with the governor as he prepares to face one of his toughest challenges of his years in that office.

>> reporter: the governor is keenly aware the state's roads and bridges are in need of repair, that is why he says he needs to raise taxes on gasoline. >> given the revenues generated from this type of tax, i can hear the families now saying i can't afford this. >> i believe it is irresponsible to do nothing. i believe that inaction has a cost, and so this is the conversation that we will have. >> the other tax issue that a lot of people are concerned about was the tax on people who make 100,000 dollars a year. you have already been criticized by republicans about it, the housing industry and the comptroller. how do you respond to them? >> there will be no shortage of criticism and better ideas are always welcome. those additional revenues will allow us to protect the investments all of us have made in public education, investments along with the hard work of teachers and dplips tray tores which had lead to us having been recognized as the best schools in america four years in a row. >> one of the many concerns

that people have had with their leaders sometimes they are out of touch with their comob man. a couple of questions i want to ask you the average person is concerned with every day. do you have any idea the average cost of a gallon of gasoline and milk and others. the governor has positioned himself as a family man. >> the call of your question is are you out of touch with how real people live and what we all have to face when we go to the grocery or to buy gasoline. i am not out of touch. i know that these are not things that any of us want to do but the better future that we seek for our children is not something that happens by itself and you know i wish there were a way that -- that

at the top of the news this half-hour more on the story we first brought you as breaking news this time yesterday. we now know what began a wild get away run that touched three counties before ending in the city. monique griego is live outside police headquarters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it all started with a routine traffic stop on the beltway and ended with that suspect being shot dead by police. the violence ended at the shopping center in baltimore city where police shot and killed a man after they say he stole a cruiser and threatened an officer. they released this photo over him. 26-year-old mon pete chonna. >> yeah, crime is getting worse and worse around this neighborhood. i just think it is crazy. >> reporter: police say it started a few miles away when a cop tried to pull him over for driving without his headlights. he fled and crashed near i-95. then things got really heated. >> he be fan to engage the

officer and fight. according to county police the suspect told the officer he has a gun and will shoot the officer. >> reporter: police say he managed to steal the police car and drove it to a motel 6. minutes later police saw an suv speed out of the parking lot with several people inside, including the man who stole the police cruiser. they pulled it over and say somehow chonna got p the driver's seat and drove away while police were putting the others in custody. investigators say next he headed to annapolis road and that shopping center where it all ended. he died in police gunfire. three baltimore county officerrers, along with one officer from anne arundel county. it is unknown how many shots went off and unclear whether the suspect was armed. >> they don't know what is on this man's mind. although i think they may have could have did it a little better if they didn't see any weapon in his hand. >> reporter: baltimore city police are now leading the investigation into find out what happened. back to you. >> thank you very much.

baltimore county police say they did not chase him but did continue to track him. court records show he did have a criminal history. new information into a crash that killed four people last weekend when a teen drove the wrong way. meghan mccorkell has clues us to what may have caused the accident. >> reporter: good morning. toxicology reports show the teenager going the wrong ways a under the influence and so was the driver she hit. >> there is a car going the wrong way. >> reporter: for 15 minutes drivers called to report a car going the wrong direction. >> i don't think they had a clue they are on the wrong side of the road. >> reporter: police didn't catch up in time. britney walker crashed head on into another car. she died along with passengers. the other driver, terry davis also killed. now investigators say both drivers were under the influence. >> she was driving on the wrong

side of the highway. and i don't know if alcohol related or not. i just don't know. >> walker's family struggles to figure out why the teen was on the wrong side of the road. the family of terry davis wants to know where were the police. >> why wasn't the cops there to stop them before they hit terry? >> sam wyatt nearly caught up in the crash. >> adrenalin you know kind of takes over and i am going into survival mode. >> he swerved just in time for avoid being hit. he was here when the chrysler flew by him and would go another 5 miles before the wreck. >> either looking to hit someone or just that far out of control. >> he says he is not surprised alcohol is involved, he is just sorry it ended so tragically. she did get a ticket for going 91 in a 65 miles per hour zone.

>> investigators found a small amount of marijuana in the teenager's car. the case of a man accused of murdering a correctional officer could be hands of a jury later. he was stabbed in 2006, leave stevens and another prisoner are charmed. closing arguments will begin later this morning. he is eligible for the death penalty if convicted. almost 50 years after the assassination of john f. kennedy recordings have been released to the public. here is kai jackson with more on long lost audiotapes. >> reporter: the just released tapes kept for years by his senior military aid were recorded as they brought his body back to washington. >> we have a report quoting that the president is dead, that he died about 35 minutes ago. >> reporter: lyndon johnson, nearly sworn in as president of the united states and his wife attempted to console his mother. >> i wish to god there was

can afford to sit by and let this happen so, what we are saying to men is this is not just a woman's problem, society's problem, it is our problem and we are looking for everybody to step up and help out in whatever small manner they can to eradicate this problem. >> the number one health risk to women and 85% of the perpetrators are men so we are trying to help each other by raising the level of awareness and also talking more importantly about ways that we can positively impact this. >> okay, let me ask you this, obviously it is a tremendous initiative by verizon, i am going to throw some props out to those folks who i have my entire account bundled with. thought i would give you that one, too. but how much -- what kind of money are you guys throwing at this? >> i think -- i don't know the precise figures of what we are

throwing behind but the verizon corporation has been involved for over 10 years and it is a considerable amount of money but more than that we do that so this is not just a drive by campaign, we have been involved in this for 10 years and we really want to see this problem start to be eradicated. all you have to do is go to one domestic violence center and hear the stories. >> i did just that, i went to the domestic violence hot line in austin texas, and also the teen, teenage help line there in austin texas and heard some of the women calling in there for help and how they dealt with them and look i am not ashamed to say it brought me to tears when i listened and felt

the pain that these women were experiencing and dealing with on an ongoing basis we just cannot allow this and as men we need to make sure we need to do our jobs not only because we don't want it to see it happening to our families but to understand what a healthy manhood is all about. >> i am curious as a man who is not a perpetrator what can a man do? >> a man can do a lot of things. we engage in off the cuff conversation that diminish the value of women and we can stop those and i know that is kind of in our dna but that is not an excuse. the next thing is we all have interactions with young men and we have to pull them up short when they are talking in a way that has an environment or creates an environment that allows domestic violence to

take place so we and be engaged in different ways. >> if i can add quickly, to the degree we can mobilize the support from some of these marquis athletes that would also be helpful. i think about chris jenkins and how he talked about everything was attack oriented and dominating and then when he had to go home with his kids he found it difficult to flip that switch so he wants to learn how to do that. there is no question we need to be involved, because to be silent is to agree with the behavior. so if you have a conversation and hear you buddy or see your buddy doing something that is not right, they will listen to us if you say hey i got a problem with that.
